Joel S. Griswold, who for the past twenty years has been engaged in the wholesale and retail milk and ice cream business in Sheboygan, is a native of Washington county, Wisconsin, his birth having occurred there on the 11rth of December, 1849. His parents were Oliver Perry and Theodosia (Wilson) Griswold, the father a native of the state of New York and the mother of Vermont.
Samuel Griswold, the grandfather of Joel S. Griswold was a captain in the War of 1812. In his early manhood, Oliver Perry Griswold went to Pennsylvania, where he engaged in farming for several years, going from there to Hartford, this state. He was twenty-eight years of age when he located in Wisconsin, and here he passed the remainder of his life, his death occurring in Sheboygan county on the 18th of March, 1881, at the age of sixty-four years.
There were two sons born to Mr. and Mrs. Griswold. The other, Sanford, is engaged in the coal business in Milwaukee. The education of Joel S. Griswold was obtained in the common schools of his native state, following which he assisted his father with the cultivation of the home farm, continuing to engage in agricultural pursuits until 1892, when he came to Sheboygan and went into his present business. He has been diligent and enterprising in the development of his undertaking and during the intervening years has succeeded in building up an excellent trade. He has a well equipped plant, which is provided with every modern appliance essential to its operation, and in the manufacture of his ice cream he uses only the best ingredients, thus producing an article that is absolutely pure and of good quality. The business is one of the oldest of the kind in the city and was founded by Henry Pape.
Mr. Griswold has been married twice, his first union being with Miss Emma Brown, a native of Wisconsin, who died in 1887. To them were born four children, as follows: Charles, a practicing physician of Chilton, this state, who is married and has one child; Frank, a physician of Bloom City, who is married an has one child; Jay, who is attending college at Appleton; and George, a physician of Melrose, Wisconsin. For his second wife Mr. Griswold chose Miss Ruth Brasure, who was born in Washington county, this state, on the 5th of November, 1867, and is a daughter of William and Mary (Smith) Brasure. The father, who was a farmer, is deceased but the mother is living. To Mr. Griswold and his second wife there have been born two children: Leslie, who is twenty-one years of age, a student at Lawrence College; and Grace, who is sixteen, now a junior in the city high school.
The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal church and Mr. Griswold also belongs to the Knights of Pythias and the Masonic fraternities. He is one of the highly esteemed business men of the city, always having conducted his undertakings in such a manner as to enable him to win and retain the respect and confidence of those with whom he has had transactions.
